The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance is holding a kick-off fundraising event at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta on Friday, February 25th from 7-9pm. For those of you who are not aware, the SDA is a SEFAA member organization, and all individual SDA members are invited and encouraged to attend this important launch event. In addition, SEFAA's annual (open) meeting is being held on Thursday, February 17th from 7-9pm. Visit SEFAA's website for more information on both of these events.

See what the ancient art of silk dye painting is all about in this fun-filled workshop. Hellenne is an accomplished silk painter who will teach you techniques to create your own 11" x 60" silk scarves using a resist and Jacquard dyes. Once the resist has dried, dye colors are applied and the dyes are set. The results: a colorful scarf or wall hanging - perfect for a gift or a treat for yourself. This is a beginner to intermediate-level workshop.

The workshop is endorsed by SEFAA and you can register at their website or through Binders. Space is limited to 10 so it is suggested that you register early.

Change in Georgia Representatives

This past August, the Georgia Chapter of the SDA gained a new State Representative: Silk Painter, Martha Andreatos. We are delighted to have Martha on board and look forward to new opportunities to share work and develop projects to expand this wonderful network of fiber artists and surface designers. Special thanks and appreciation are extended to Leisa Rich who, for more than two years, enthusiastically supported the group to connect and share experience. A highlight of Leisa's tenure was the Defoor Center show in 2009 (see sidebar). This was a great chance to come together and show the great diversity of work that is embodied by the SDA. We look forward to many Georgia SDA group shows, and affiliations, in the future!

Introduction to Nuno Felting

October 8-10, 2010

Workshop Description: Nuno Felting (also know as know as “nuno rusca” and "laminated felting") is a dynamic felting technique that offers another level of textural possibilities for textile artists and surface designers. Explore this medium further in an introductory weekend workshop. This small, informal group workshop will provide hands-on experience via both group and/or solo samplers, as well as technical support and creative inspiration for both seasoned surface designers and artists new to the nuno felting medium. No prior experience is necessary. Participants will gain an understanding of the basic scope of the laminated felted process, including materials and possibilities, layout considerations, rolling and post-roll felting, as well as further processing/finishing. Some written reference material will be provided. Working materials will be provided (see materials fee). We will be working with both undyed and predyed components (backing cloth and fiber).

Course Description: Throughout history, difficult times have given birth to creative resourcefulness by inspiring the exploration of diverse techniques using experimental materials. Discover how you can use creative free motion machine embroidery and hand stitch techniques, and processes such as stressing, folding, manipulating, burning, re-stitching, and LED lights to push your work beyond usual technical and conceptual boundaries to create one-of-a-kind surfaces with depth and intriguing visual interest. We will use a variety of recycled and common materials such as wool felt, vinyl, rubber, plastic bags, and some not-so-common ones like pedicure flip flops, flexible LED strips and more. Applications to art quilting, fashion/garment production, wearable art, surface design, home sewing, fiber art, mixed media painting and more. All levels.

René Shoemaker creates hand-painted textile representing experience, movement through space, a sense of place, and an appreciation for architecture. The intimate artworks capture the feel of the city by exploring the secrets of its architectural details. The image, after being drawn onto the silk, is then colored by hand with dyes that permanently bond with the fabric. The designs are lovely and the colors magnificent – inspired by Henri Matisse and reminiscent of Richard Dieberkorn and Milton Avery.

Born and raised in Staten Island, René now lives outside the college town of Athens, Georgia. This exhibit is an homage to what she loved about growing up in New York, and incorporates lessons learned from the landscape architects, historic preservationists and artists she currently works with at the University of Georgia.

Come explore Monroe from an "outsider's" view. After walking through downtown Monroe, discovering the beauty, texture, and architectural history of the town, René then drew what she saw, and "painted" the designs on the silk - so that she could share it back with the citizens of Monroe.

By day, René is the librarian and gallery director at the College of Environment & Design at the University of Georgia. Her work with landscape architects, historic preservationists, and planners, informs her artistic view of the world. Her work represents experience, movement through space and an appreciation for historic architecture and architectural details. She holds a degree in fabric design from UGA, and an MLIS for University of South Carolina.

A Lecture Demonstration

Utilizing current technologies, the artist/composer Ray Pierotti will demonstrate how he created a
professional DVD combining original paintings & musical compositions through the
use of digital photography and digitized sound.

The process is relatively simple but requires disciplined time and imagination.
He will share the process he developed to create a suite of short
visual/sounded movies called Pictumsonus©.

Each sounded painting is composed of seven universal systems used by various cultures to
access their personal path to self enlightenment and higher learning.
Several individuals have experienced a sense of emotional healing by
watching the DVD.

Athens Academy Runs A-Fowl: The Studio Group at Athens Academy's Myers Gallery

Not many art shows have chickens on display. But The Studio Group's debut show at AthensAcademy-about to end March 31-does. You will have another chance to see these fowls since the group will host a closing reception on Saturday, March 27, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the school's Myers Gallery.

The show presents the works of twelve artists that range from ceramics, fused glass, photography, turned wood, paintings, pastels, jewelry, and metalwork. And the life-size bronze and silver Cubalaya and Malay chickens that seem to forage on their pedestals among diaphanous hanging painted silks. If other metal makes your heart throb, the sculptural lamps, crocheted-metal baskets and bracelets, as well as fabricated sterling silver jewelry, will be sure to do that. But if glass is your passion, there are the brilliantly colored fused-glass objects, often with tango motifs. And if two-dimensional work is more your cup of paint, it is there, on paper, board, and silk.

Started in 1981, The Studio Group is one of the longest ongoing art groups in the Athens area and for the past several years has been holding its annual pre-Thanksgiving show and sale in the Chase Street Warehouses' ATHICA. The members typically also exhibit elsewhere during the year-at Jekyll Island,Lake Oconee, Atlanta galleries, for example; their current show at Athens Academy is their first one there. The artists exhibiting include Margaret Agner, Barbara Allen, Nancy Carter, Anna Eidsvik, Annette Hatton, Dave Lindsay, Caroline Montague, Christie Moody, Jim Norton, Sarah Pattison, Michael Spronck, Pat Staub, and Jim Talley.

With its dramatic glass wall overlooking a small lake, Myers Gallery is a striking space, tucked away toward the rear of Athens Academy, and is perhaps little known to most Athenians. It is open, however, to the public from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and by appointment (call 706 549-9225).

The closing reception will be held Saturday, March 27, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Myers Gallery,AthensAcademy, 1281 Spartan Lane, Athens, GA 30604. Free and open to the public.

“Fresh Approaches in Urban Development for Athens”

Athens Above textile art exhibit opens at Ciné BarCafeCinema March 19, 2010

In conjunction with the one-day symposium “Fresh Approaches in Urban Development for Athens” hosted by the Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation and held at Ciné BarCafeCinema , René Shoemaker will be exhibiting her one-of-a-kind textile paintings of Athens Above, a unique view of the skyline of Athens, Ga. Rene’s art is a technique of hand-painted silks that she has been practicing for over 20 years in Athens.

René’s interest in urban development stems from her roots, having been born and raised in New York City, as well has her work as the director of the Owens Library & Circle Gallery at the UGA College of Environment & Design (CED). Her workplace informs her design sensibility and interpretation of place; she values Athens as a quality livable city.

“My intention through the artwork is to help people open their eyes to the physical and spiritual essence of our every-day environment. I found that when looking up at the rooflines, I noticed the stark geometric forms of the buildings against the exquisite blue sky of Athens in the fall and the spring seasons. I wanted to share that vision with my fellow citizens.”

This exhibit and reception is free and open to the public. The textile art will be on display March 19 through April 13, 2010. The reception for the two products will be held from 6-8 pm on April 1, at Ciné.

This summer, take advantage of a new flex plan for Fiber Bee that allows you to choose and pay for the specific Workshop sessions that you want, on an À la carte basis. Also for the first time this summer, you can come for Open Studio time—bring your own project to work on and get advice, encouragement, and fun working alongside friends.

Here’s how it works: Purchase a punch card for $60. Each card entitles you to 6 hours of Workshop time ($10 per hour) or 12 hour of Open Studio time ($5 per hour—what a deal!) or any combination thereof. You may also purchase a card worth $90 (9 hours Workshop or 18 hours Open Studio or a combination). Or buy TWO $60 cards! Each workshop is offered twice, on Tuesday afternoon or Saturday morning, so you can choose the time that suits you. Open studio time is offered six times, three Tuesdays and three Saturdays.

The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance (SEFAA) is a new nonprofit organization dedicated to providing fiber arts education and to promoting and preserving the fiber arts. SEFAA's goal is to develop a comprehensive fiber art center in Atlanta with a vibrant and creative atmosphere that will engage and enrich anyone with an interest in fiber. Unlike the numerous existing art centers, galleries, and exhibition spaces in Atlanta, SEFAA will focus on fiber, filling a large and critical void in the arts landscape. As Leisa Rich, SEFAA Director, puts it: " I see SEFAA as a place where old dogs can teach old tricks to new dogs and watch them depart from tradition to form inspirational creations; where fiber artists can interact and learn from one another, thereby becoming better artists; where classes and workshops open new doors to the public so they may learn new skills while learning how important the fiber arts are to our communities; where there is local validation of fiber arts as a "real" art form; where there is a place to buy a handmade gift--a vibrant, thriving, growing, ever-changing and dynamic place to be, learn and grow!"

SEFAA began in 2008 as an offshoot of the Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild's (CHG'S) Long Range Planning Committee. A priority of the Planning Committee was to find a permanent home for the guild, but CHG resources didn't match the group's dream to lease or purchase larger facilities. Realizing that other fiber organizations were in the same position, and on the premise that it takes a community to build a fiber center, CHG contacted other local fiber organizations. SEFAA was born after members of the Atlanta Knitting Guild, The Dogwood Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America, the local chapter of the Surface Design Association and interested individuals started meeting together. Over the course of 2009, SEFAA incorporated, registered with the State of Georgia as a Charitable Organization, and secured 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the IRS.

The new organization's goals for 2010 are fundraising, fundraising, and more fundraising! In addition, SEFAA plans to find space to lease to begin limited programming and, hopefully, to provide studio space. Given the state of economy, this may be a difficult process. But, SEFAA is optimistic! As Suzi Gough, President of SEFAA, says: “What excites me about SEFAA is that it is an alliance of individuals, organizations and businesses sharing resources and ideas and working together. Just yesterday, members of the Dogwood Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America were invited to attend the Chattahoochee Handweavers Guild February meeting for the Georgia premier of Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost’s Creating Buddhas: The Making and Meaning of Fabric Thangkas. SEFAA is already intertwining the fiber arts community!”

SEFAA recently had a booth at the Original Sewing and Quilt EXPO at the Gwinnett Center March 11th through the 13th, and will be at STITCHES South at the Cobb Galleria April 22nd through the 25th. MARGARET AGNER SDA MEMBER ANNOUNCES EXHIBIT

Margaret has 14 silk hangings in floral and butterfly motifs installed at this restaurant. All works are for sale.

She received a 2nd place in fiber award in the 2009 Georgia in Bloom exhibit at Madison, GA. Her work, a silk hand-painted banner entitled Coneflowers and Cosmos, is at the Red Door in Rutledge through May 9, 2009.

The Studio Group, Margaret's local exhibition consortium, is showing at Aurum Jewelry and Art Oconee Village (Greensboro, Georgia) where she has a dozen of her fiber works on display. The group also has an installation at Athens Art & Framing on Clayton Street in Athens, GA. Two fiber works are in the show along with 6 paintings.

Ms. Agner will be the juror for the Hartwell (GA) Juried Art Show in June, 2009.

This is a wonderful venue and all of the members will have an opportunity the exhibit their myriad of skills in this exciting media of surface design. The opening reception will be held on Friday May 15th from 7:30 to 9:30. Please join us.

The Surface Design Association was formed and incorporated in 1977 as a non-profit organization which was committed to educate, inspire, and provide opportunities in the field of surface design. Currently the organization has 4,000 members; of these 600 are international members.

The Georgia Chapter is part of the Southeast Region and has over 60 members. The SDAofGeorgia is currently working on a group exhibition which will be held at the Defoor Centre Gallery during May of '09.

You may ask "What is Surface Design" The current president of SDA, Jason Pollen, expresses the varied art form beautifully in the following paragraph.

"We surface designers are destined to explore charted and uncharted textile territories. We are detectives attentive to the illusive clues that might just reveal the nature of how images come into existence for our delight when a moment ago there was only darkness.
While we are immersed in the creation of universes of color on cloth, the blacksmiths are forging steel monuments to solidity; the clay and hot glass students are focused on the transformative potential of earth and fire; the jewelry makers are harvesting bits and pieces from their mini world to compose three-dimensional haiku; and the painters are re-discovering the unique waxy/oily properties of encaustic."
